Visit Tallinn, one of the hottest new destinations in Europe that has miraculously managed to preserve its thousand-year old beauty. Estonia's capital is a genuine museum-town, unique among other old European towns for its well-preserved medieval Old Town. The Old Town of Tallinn (first mentioned in 1154) is since 1997 on the World Heritage List of UNESCO. Today, Tallinn is a modern and dynamic society where new buildings appear everywhere as a celebration to the country's newly won independence. Still, Tallinn is small enough to get familiar with its mixture of traditions, influences and numerous pleasant surprises even if you don't have much time.
Once a medieval Hanseatic town and for long periods in history dominated by the Germans, Swedes and Russians, Tallinn today contain lots of influence from those days but still manages to retain an Estonian soul and identity. This is not a huge capital, just about 400 000 inhabitants, but it has it all. A very rich cultural and pleasant atmosphere and many interesting sights yet to be explored.
